City of Palatka to Honor Local Sports Icons

Palatka, FL – The City of Palatka is pleased to announce that several facilities within Booker Park, located at 701 North 10th Street, will be renamed to honor influential sports figures and community leaders who have shaped the city’s legacy. These changes pay tribute to the exceptional contributions of individuals who have served as role models, pioneers, and mentors for generations of young people in Palatka.
A special ceremony will be held at Booker Park on Saturday, December 21, at 10 a.m. to officially dedicate the following facilities:
- John L. Williams Field: Celebrating a Palatka native who rose to the ranks of a first-round NFL draft pick and has tirelessly supported local youth sports programs.
- Johnson Session Field: Paying tribute to a groundbreaking coach, referee, and umpire who broke barriers during segregation and dedicated decades to guiding young athletes.
- Jarvis Williams Basketball Courts: Honoring a local athlete who excelled in the NFL and returned home to mentor, coach, and inspire the community’s youth.
Former Palatka Mayor, community advocate, and historian Terrill Hill will lead this event. By highlighting the stories of these three remarkable individuals, the City hopes to preserve their legacy and inspire future generations to embrace excellence, perseverance, and a commitment to uplifting others.
