[ARCHIVED] From the Manager’s Desk

Pal_02132024_City_Bell-2

As we approach the end of summer and our students head back to the classroom, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what the City has accomplished during these past few months.

One of the most visible projects has been the repaving of St. Johns Avenue from the railroad tracks to 4th Street. This project began on a Sunday evening and, despite daily torrential downpours, was almost entirely finished by the end of the week. It is a prime example of how Public Works, City Hall staff, and the Police Department collaborated with contractors to complete the job quickly and with minimal disruptions to traffic and businesses. Stay tuned for more information on the next phase of improvements to St. Johns Avenue, which will include upgrades to sidewalks, lighting and landscaping.

Equally important, though less visible, is the work happening beneath our city streets to line and repair sewers and manholes. Palatka, with its rich and important history, unfortunately, has an aging infrastructure, including some antiquated utility pipes dating back to the late 1800s. The ongoing sewer and stormwater relining projects are a crucial part of our efforts to maintain and extend the life of our infrastructure, ensuring it continues to serve the public effectively and safely.

In line with these efforts, we are also making significant improvements to our water and wastewater treatment plants. These multi-million-dollar projects, funded by state and federal grants, will ensure that our residents have clean and safe drinking water and effective water treatment for many years.

Additionally, we have undertaken much-needed roof repair projects. The first was the roof of the City Hall Annex on Second Street, which now houses the Planning Department, portions of Human Resources, and the offices of Keep Putnam Beautiful. The second project was the roof of the Police Department, which had been leaking for several years. These buildings, opened in the late 1960s, are critical to our operations, and their upkeep is a priority. The City is also repairing the roof and replacing air conditioning units at the Robert H. Jenkins Community Center on Napoleon Street.

Last week marked the final day for our summer interns, who worked in various departments across the city. This group of talented high school-aged young people gained firsthand experience in City Hall, the Fire and Police Departments, Public Works, and Community Affairs. It was a pleasure to see their enthusiasm and dedication to public service. Meeting and talking with them has assured that the future of the City of Palatka is in good hands.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our community. Together, we are making Palatka an even better place to live, work, shop, and play. Service 1st through selflessness, honesty, integrity, and the pursuit of perfect commitment and collaboration.
